The Department of Military History consists of a mix of active duty and civilian faculty, along with Army Civilian Professionals.


What is a Title 10 hire?

Under Title 10 USC 4021 authority, the Secretary of the Army “may employ as many civilians as professors, instructors, and lecturers” as necessary at CGSC. Title 10 faculty are term employees of the excepted service, that is, separate from the Army civilians in the competitive (GS) service. For CGSC, Title 10 employees are individuals who hold advanced degrees. There is an initial two-year probationary period. After this period finishes, employees receive a three to five-year contract that is eligible for renewal. Most hires in DMH go on to serve long and distinguished careers in the department. The current average tenure of the civilian DMH faculty members is twelve years, with twenty-one years being the longest current active person. The faculty are required to obtain or hold a Ph.D. in History. Openings are announced on our Facebook page, Twitter feed, and on USAJOBs.
