Course Information: The purpose of the CGSC Instructor Course is to prepare new faculty to teach CGSC students in an adult learning environment. It also prepares new instructors assigned to other schools that fall into the CGSC footprint: Army Management Staff College (AMSC), the School for Advanced Military Studies (SAMS), the School for Command Preparation (SCP), the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC), and the Defense Language Institute (DLI). It is a competency-based course: the basis for the learning objectives are internationally recognized instructor competencies published by the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance, and Instruction (ibstpi). It introduces new faculty to Army instructor roles and responsibilities, teaching and learning models, and professional and ethical requirements. The course also introduces classroom management techniques, the process for building learning objectives and lesson plans, and characteristics of effective communication. Throughout the course, new faculty will have an opportunity to practice teaching, working from short, simple practicum exercises to increasingly longer and more complex ones, culminating in an end of course lesson presentation. The outcome of the CGSC Instructor Course is for graduates to be prepared to teach CGSC students in accordance with the Experiential Learning Model.

Phase Name: 1Training Days: 21Academic Hours: 40
Scope: The CGSC Instructor Course is a variation of the ten-day/80-hour Common Faculty Development – Instructor Course (CFD-IC). The CGSC Instructor Course is an 80-hour blended learning course consisting of a DL Phase I with an instructor in the loop and a face-to-face, (resident) Phase II designed specifically for the target audience of faculty and staff who teach at the US Army Command and General Staff College. CGSC faculty are all college graduates, most have advanced degrees, and nearly a third have terminal degrees (doctorates). The purpose of the CGSC Instructor Course is to prepare new faculty to teach CGSC students in an adult learning environment. The outcome of the CGSC Instructor Course is for graduates to be prepared to teach CGSC students in accordance with the Experiential Learning Model. The blended format of the CGSC Instructor Course achieves the same learning objectives as the 80-hour Common Faculty Development Instructor Course by requiring completion of some of the learning objectives before beginning the resident course and by shortening the amount of time allocated to some of the topics based on an analysis of the target audience. Additional time saved is a result of focusing on the Experiential Learning instructional strategy, with only minimal instruction on the Direct and Collaborative/Interactive instructional strategies, since they are not the primary teaching and learning strategies employed at CGSC.
