Course Information: Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Specialist (Ph 1) is a preparatory course designed to provide basic skills and knowledges required to attend the joint service EOD course at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. Students are taught the fundamentals of explosive ordnance disposal, which includes EOD procedures; identification and hazards of U.S. and foreign conventional munitions; care of EOD tools and equipment; demolition training; EOD Operations; and basic electronics (DC power).

Scope: Module A – Bomb Suit Suitability, Introduction, and Terminology, provides students with Bomb Suit Suitability Assessment; brief history of U.S. Army EOD; baseline knowledge of EOD terminology; thorough understanding of general EOD safety precautions; general understanding of Explosives and Explosive Effects; thorough knowledge and understanding of ordnance color codes and markings; and a preliminary understanding of fuze arming and firing functions. Module B – Demolitions & Mk 2 Mod 1 Dearmer, provides students with a basic understanding of electronics and electricity; general overview of conventional and commercial demolition materials; thorough understanding and application of the preparation and employment of detonating cord firing systems, non-electric firing systems, modern demolition firing systems, electric firing systems, and the MK2 MOD 1 .50 caliber dearmer. Module C – Ordnance Identification, provides students with instruction and reinforces of the application of processes learned to positively identify ordnance by category, type, fuzing, and corresponding safety precautions, to include: Grenades, Rockets, Projectiles, Guided Missiles, Bombs, Dispensers, Payloads, and Landmines. Module D – EOD Publications and Reconnaissance, provides students with a detailed overview and familiarization of the EOD Mobile Field Kit (MFK), the Automated EOD Publications System (AEODPS), and the Tactical Decision Aid (TDA); practical application of EOD safety precautions and the tools, techniques, and procedures learned to safely conduct the reconnaissance to positively identify the UXO encountered. Module-E – Tools, Robots, and EOD Challenge, includes team building, resiliency, and critical thinking exercises; and familiarization with additional EOD render safe tool sets, to include the MK 1 Mod 3 Remote Wrench, Percussion Actuated Neutralizer (PAN), Hook and Line (HAL) Kit and various EOD robotic platforms. The methods of instruction for this training includes large/small group discussion, lecture, demonstrations, and practical exercises (Performance/Hands On and Written). Learning is assessed through four written tests, five hands-on test, the bomb suit suitability assessment, and a 57-hour cumulative end-of-course Field Training Exercise (FTX).
