CSM Anthony E. Rice

Interim Command Sergeant Major Army University

CSM Anthony Rice began his military career in September 1989. After attending Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Ft. Sill, OK, he deployed as a member of Alpha Battery, 2nd Bn, 142nd Field Artillery Bde in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, where he served as the ammunition team chief. In October 2001, he mobilized in support of Operation Noble Eagle and again for ONE II in 2003, serving as a squad leader. In June 2006, Rice mobilized once more in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom where he served as a platoon sergeant.

CSM Rice has served in several leadership positions within the FA community, from gunner on M110 howitzers, section chief, platoon sergeant and first sergeant. Rice was promoted to sergeant major on Oct. 1, 2010, when he was assigned to be the command sergeant major of 1st Bn, 206th FA Regiment, 39th IN Bde Combat Team, Arkansas Army National Guard. While with the 206th, Rice was selected to serve as the brigade CSM of the 142nd Field Artillery Brigade, AANG. Rice was most recently selected as the first CSM in the NG to serve as the brigade level Command Sergeants Major Developmental Program facilitator at the School of Command Preparation, at Ft. Leavenworth, KS, where he is currently serving in a full-time capacity.

CSM Rice has received the following awards and decorations: the Meritorious Service Medal; the Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters; the Army Achievement Medal with one silver and two bronze oak leaf clusters; the Army Good Conduct Medal; the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with one silver and one bronze oak leaf cluster; the National Defense Service Medal with one service star; the Southwest Asia Service Medal; the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “M” mobilization device; the Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon with numeral “5”; the Army Service Ribbon; the Overseas Service Ribbon; the Saudi Arabian Medal for the Liberation of Kuwait; the Kuwait Liberation Medal; the Arkansas Federal Service Ribbon; the Arkansas Service Ribbon and the Arkansas Emergency Service Ribbon.

CSM Rice’s military education includes the Primary Leadership Development Course; Basic Non Commissioned Officer Course; Advanced Non Commissioned Officer Course; Total Army Instructor Training Course; Paladin Commander’s Course and the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy. He currently has thirty years of honorable service.

CSM Rice is a member of the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States, the U. S. Army FA Association, and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #39. Rice is an 18 year veteran of the Fort Smith, AR PD where he has served as a patrol officer, a detective in the SIU, the PIO, and a member of the Child Abduction Response Team and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. CSM Rice and his wife, Deanna, have been married for over twenty-six years. CSM Rice has one daughter a step-son and four grandchildren.
